Kevin Charles(The Artist)
Very Few artist are able to portray the relationship the relationship each of us shares
with our surroundings with the same amount of skill and depth that as Kevin Charles.In
his over 40 plus years of painting, Kevin has grown, not only as an individual, but also in
hi ability to craft portraits that tug at the very heart strings of his enthusiast.
K.C., as he is more affectionately known ,was raised in the Cedar Hill community of
Anne Arundel County. He is the oldest of 4 children born to John and Lucille, a
Pentacostal minister and a homemaker and accomplished artist in her own right. The
values of education and creative endeavors were paramount in his tightly knit family.
Recognized for his special ability at a very a young age, those around him knew that he
possessed talent had to be nurtured and cultivated. During his teenage years, he was
commissioned to paint several still standing murals for various schools and churches
throughout the area. To this day, his work still has a very characteristic style that is
immediately recognized by those that have followed his growth.
In 2001, Kevin settled in the West Side of Baltimore City. Later that year, his mother
and Largest supporter became ill and passed away shortly thereafter. As a result of some
of the of the conversations he shared with her during her final days, he realized that he
was not living up to his full potential as an artist. Soon, all of his free time was being
consumed by his newly energized desire to express him self through art. During the same
year, he abandoned his job as a manager of a local McDonald and threw his total
energy into his painting.
2004 invigorated his career when he was commissioned to paint a Baltimore Ravens mural
on the vehicle of a Raven fan. Numerous other commissions and several appearances on the
"Manic Monday" segments of WJZ-13 (Baltimore) and as they say, the rest was
history.K.C.became a local celebrity. Kevin's skill with depicting realistic life size
painting of Raven superstars like Ray Lewis made hi skill with the brush highly sought
after
Here is an artist who is master of depicting the human struggle,vitality, and uniqueness
that exists in everyone. His juxtaposition of intricate detail with steadfast matter is a
key element of K.C.'s unique style and extraordinary popularity. His continuous endeavor
to capture and preserve the tranquility, beauty, and aura of his astute vision through
painting is the essence of his life. His belief is that "art is functional" and that it should
have meaning or symbolism to the owner."Whether it be a picture of their favorite sport
figure or a picture of their mother,I am here to give that to you". This dedication to
making art useful makes K.C., "The Man". Such a special individual to all of those he
has touched. He feels that long after he is gone, his work will stand as a living testimony
to his commitment to bringing people closer to those things that makes life and art real.
Though he has no formal training in art Kevin Charles will long be remembered as one
that has taught us all how to use our natural talents and abilities to prosper despite
whatever setbacks we experience in life. Ultimately, it is the intangible quality of his
ability to capture expressions and distinct size "king of the gridiron", there exists in K.C.
's art an ethereal vulnerability one want to protect along with an inherit strength one want
to know.
With his first solo exhibition, "Urban Rhthyms", at the historic Arena Players Theatre
in West Baltimore. Kevin introduces the world to some of the many other dimensions to his
personalty. "Rhythm is the beat of life, particularly for black people." Through his
pieces he aims to show some of the things that force us all to keep up the pace and to
maintain a steady tempo while moving through life. With pieces that cover a wide range of
subject matter, K.C. proves that he is much more than what some might assume. His
collection includes many paintings of well known sports figures and celebrities for which
he is known. He will also unveil some of his lesser-known works that express some of the
ideals that are closer to his heart
